It works by shining a laser or broadband light onto the wafer surface, then analyzing the interference pattern (oscillations) created by reflections from different layers.
LEP (Laser Endpoint Detection / Light-based Endpoint Detection) is an optical method that uses one or more laser wavelengths to measure changes in reflectivity or interference during etching or deposition.
