Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) are a class of probabilistic generative neural networks that learn a latent variable model of data by combining autoencoder architectures with variational Bayesian inference. Instead of encoding inputs into fixed latent vectors, a VAE encodes each input into a probability distribution (typically a Gaussian) over a continuous latent space, from which latent variables are sampled using the reparameterization trick to enable gradient-based optimization. Training optimizes a variational lower bound (ELBO) that balances accurate data reconstruction with regularization that encourages the learned latent distributions to match a predefined prior, usually a standard normal distribution. This formulation enables VAEs to generate new, diverse samples, learn smooth and structured latent representations, and model uncertainty in complex high-dimensional data.
