Tetra-N-Butyl Ammonium Hydroxide is an strong organic base that can be used in a variety of applications from advanced semiconductors to organic chemistry. TBAH is used as an eluent and regenerant for ion chromatography.
Tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide is a strong base commonly used to achieve alkylation and deprotonation under phase transfer conditions. Typical reactions include benzylation of amines and dehydrochlorination of chloroform to dichlorocarbenes. Tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide can undergo acid-base neutralization reaction with various inorganic acids to obtain lipophilic corresponding inorganic acid conjugate bases. For example, the reaction of disodium pyrophosphate (Na2H2P2O7) with tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide produces [(n-Bu)4N]3[HP2O7], which is soluble in organic solvents. The relatively anhydrous tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF) can be obtained by neutralizing tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide with hydrofluoric acid. This salt is soluble in organic solvents and can be used for desilylation.
