Thin film lithium niobate chip is an integrated optical device developed based on the lithium niobate material system. The electro-optic coefficient of lithium niobate is significantly higher than that of other materials such as indium phosphide, while silicon has no direct electro-optic coefficient. This makes lithium niobate perform well in electro-optic modulation and become a key device in large-capacity optical fiber transmission networks and high-speed optoelectronic information processing systems.
Lithium niobate has ultra-low optical loss, which helps to achieve more efficient optical signal transmission and processing. Lithium niobate has stable physical and chemical properties and a wide range of light transmission, so that thin-film chips made from it can maintain stable performance in various environments.
Through new micro-nano processes such as ion implantation, wafer bonding or mechanical thinning, lithium niobate crystals are processed into thin-film structures with a thickness of hundreds of nanometers. This planarization process can significantly reduce the characteristic size of photonic devices and increase the integration density. One of the key preparation technologies for thin-film lithium niobate chips is the patterning of lithium niobate films. Currently, the publicly available patterning technology routes include electron beam lithography (EBL) + dry etching/wet etching, ultraviolet + dry etching, DUV + dry etching, etc. Among them, the EBL+dry etching route is popular due to its advantages such as high processing precision, flexible layout design, and direct exposure without mask.
