An electrodialysis device is a system that utilizes electrodialysis technology for the selective separation of ions from a solution. It consists of several components, including ion exchange membranes, electrodes, and a power supply.The basic principle of an electrodialysis device involves the application of an electric field across the ion exchange membranes. The membranes are selectively permeable to specific ions, allowing them to pass through while blocking others. By controlling the electric field and the arrangement of the membranes, the device can separate and concentrate ions based on their charge and size.Electrodialysis is a process that utilizes ions to migrate through a selective ion exchange membrane under the action of a DC electric field, thereby partially separating electrolyte ions from a solution. Electrodialysis equipment (ED) is a physical and chemical process that utilizes an anion and cation exchange membrane to selectively transmit anions and cations in a solution under the action of an external electric field, thereby separating inorganic impurity ions and solvent water in the solution. Electrodialysis can be applied to material desalination, wastewater desalination, seawater desalination pretreatment or brine treatment, food desalination and other fields.
Electrodialysis technology was first promoted in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and other countries, and is mainly used in seawater desalination and drinking water production. So far, it has been widely used in material desalination, wastewater desalination, seawater desalination pretreatment or concentrated brine treatment. Nowadays, it is most widely used in the Middle East, Japan, the United States and other regions. Among them, the development of electrodialysis technology in Japan can be said to be a latecomer. It is currently the only country in the world that uses electrodialysis technology to produce salt on a large scale.
From the perspective of ion exchange membranes and electrodialysis equipment in different regions and enterprises, the electrodialysis industry tends to be non-standardized, and many things have not formed a unified development of the industry, which has hindered the development of electrodialysis technology to a certain extent.
The initial use of electrodialysis was seawater desalination. With the continuous efforts of electrodialysis companies, the advancement of membrane technology and the continuous development of application technology, the application of homogeneous membrane and bipolar membrane electrodialysis is gradually expanding, and electrodialysis will be widely used in energy, food, medicine, biology, metallurgy, chemical industry, environmental protection and drinking water.
At present, about 1/4 of the world's population is facing an "extreme water shortage" crisis. Multiple factors have exacerbated the pressure on water resources, and the demand for water treatment and seawater desalination has increased. Electrodialysis has many successful cases in the field of zero discharge of wastewater and waste salt resource utilization. Compared with high-pressure reverse osmosis and forward osmosis, it has less total investment, lower operating costs, higher concentration than high-pressure reverse osmosis and similar to forward osmosis, good corrosion resistance, high safety, good technology and economy, and is more suitable for inorganic salt wastewater concentration. At the same time, with the gradual increase in the country's requirements for environmental protection and the increasing environmental awareness of enterprises, electrodialysis has rapidly expanded the number of people engaged in the electrodialysis industry with its advantages of high efficiency, energy saving, less three wastes, and less land occupation in concentrating inorganic salts and desalting materials. Therefore, the demand for electrodialysis technology will increase.
