These differences cause different piezoelectric deformations, which allow acoustic waves to efficiently propagate in different directions: either along the surface of the sensor, or away from the sensor surface towards the bulk substrate. This distinction is quite important and is the basis of the classification of acoustic sensors into either surface acoustic wave (SAW) or bulk acoustic wave (BAW) sensors.
