Cold atomic source cells is the heart of the high throughput atomic transport system. The differential pumping of the system is maintained by an aperture in the silicon plate which isolates the user"s vacuum system from the higher pressures required for high density 2D MOT operation. Cold atom experiments start with cooling atoms down to extremely low temperatures using techniques such as laser cooling and evaporative cooling. The Cold Atom Source Cell provides the controlled environment for this cooling process. Cold atoms are often trapped using magnetic fields or optical (laser) fields. The Cold Atom Source Cell can contain the necessary apparatus for creating these traps and maintaining the conditions required for atom confinement. To avoid atom collisions with gas molecules, Cold Atom Source Cells are typically placed in a vacuum chamber to create an ultra-low-pressure environment.
