This phenomenon is called Avalanche Multiplication and results in a large number of free carriers created by photons lit up by image sensors. This means that it can amplify photons and recognize them as a much larger number of photons even though only a small number of them were actually captured, due to dark surroundings or if light was emitted from a far distance.
