Fiber coating materials are used in optical fiber cables, including a soft buffer layer coated when the fiber is drawn and molded, and later a harder, tough, wear-resistant, chemical-resistant protective layer and a multi-layer protection system composed of a colored coating. It is an important part of communication optical fibers for protecting light-guided glass fibers from the external environment and maintaining their sufficient mechanical strength and optical properties.Acrylic resin (ACylate) adopts a single-layer coating process to make the outer diameter of coated fibers reach 250μm. At present, the mainstream fiber coating material in the world is acrylic resin coating. The advantages of this coating are fast curing, easy to produce, and low cost; the disadvantage is that it is not resistant to high temperatures, and its working temperature range is generally −60℃~85℃. In sensing application testing, the measured strain of acrylic single-mode fiber is lower than that of bare fibers. Therefore, acrylic resin coated fibers are often used in the communication field, but are not suitable for strain testing in the sensing field.
UV cured fiber optic cable coating materials have broad prospects. Driven by the national informationization strategies such as the three major domestic operators’ demand for base station construction exploded, the steady implementation of the “Broadband China” strategy, the continuous growth of FTTx (fiber access) and rural informatization construction, my country’s demand for fiber optic cables will continue to grow rapidly.
