A microchannel plate (MCP) is used to detect single particles (electrons, ions and neutrons) and photons (ultraviolet radiation and X-rays). It is closely related to an electron multiplier, as both intensify single particles or photons by the multiplication of electrons via secondary emission, however because a microchannel plate detector has many separate channels, it can additionally provide spatial resolution.
A microchannel plate is a highly microstructured glass or ceramic plate widely used in particle and photon detectors to enhance and amplify the signal of electrons, photons or ions. MCP detectors are devices that integrate a microchannel plate into the detector for the detection and measurement of particles and radiation. Microchannel plates consist of a large number of tiny channels, usually on the surface of a glass or ceramic plate. The diameter of the channel is usually between a few micrometers and tens of micrometers, and the length can reach several millimeters. The microchannel plate enhances the signal through the secondary electron multiplication mechanism (Secondary Electron Multiplication). When the primary electrons or photons enter the microchannel, they will excite the electrons on the channel wall, and these secondary electrons will be accelerated by the electric field, thus triggering the electron chain amplification and enhancing the signal intensity.
