A frequency - to - current converter is an electronic device that converts an input frequency signal into a corresponding output current signal. It plays a crucial role in many industrial and electronic applications where there is a need to interface between frequency - based sensors and current - driven control or measurement systems.
Usually, the converter first measures the input frequency signal through a counter or timer. It counts the number of pulses within a specific time interval or measures the time period between consecutive pulses. Based on this measurement result, it uses a digital - to - analog conversion circuit or a current - control circuit to generate an output current signal that is proportional to the input frequency. For example, in a timer - based converter, a timer is used to count the pulses of the input frequency signal. The count value is then used to control a current source to output a corresponding current. In a voltage - to - frequency conversion - based converter, the frequency signal is first converted into a voltage signal, and then the voltage - to - current conversion circuit is used to obtain the final current signal.
