A floating natural gas liquefaction unit is an offshore floating factory that integrates natural gas pretreatment, liquefaction, storage, and export loading. It is then stored directly in the hull or modular tanks and loaded onto LNG carriers for export via a loading system. Compared to onshore LNG plants, FLNG reduces the need for long-distance subsea pipelines and onshore land acquisition, making it suitable for development in remote offshore areas, small to medium-sized gas fields, or those limited by safety and onshore conditions.
The upstream of FLNG comes from offshore gas field development (exploration, wellhead, subsea production system, gathering and compression), and after entering FLNG, gas processing and liquefaction are completed; the core of the midstream is the FLNG hull/topsides engineering, cryogenic liquefaction process package, compressor and heat exchanger, cryogenic storage tank, power and control system, etc. (key materials/equipment include cryogenic steel and nickel-based alloys, thick plates and marine structural steel, cryogenic valves and pipes, cryogenic heat exchangers, gas turbines/generators, instrumentation and control systems, etc.) Representative upstream/key equipment and material suppliers include: liquefaction process and main equipment (such as Air Products, Honeywell UOP, Linde, etc.), hull and offshore engineering EPC contractors/shipyards (such as Technip Energies/TechnipFMC, Samsung Heavy Industries, Seatrium, etc.); downstream are LNG trading and terminal receiving (utilities/oil and gas companies/traders), with typical participants including Shell, Eni, ExxonMobil, etc., playing development and operation/sales roles in FLNG projects.
