Modern i-line steppers typically offer resolution down to ≈0.35 µm with an NA around 0.45, support 200 mm and in some models 300 mm wafers, and are widely used for front-end-of-line and back-end-of-line layers at mature nodes, as well as for power devices, CMOS image sensors, MEMS, compound semiconductors and IoT/automotive chips.
Demand for i-line steppers is primarily driven by the structural expansion of mature-node capacity supporting power electronics, analog/RF, sensor, MEMS and “more-than-Moore” devices. As vehicle electrification, 5G/6G deployment, industrial automation and IoT proliferate, fab operators continue to invest in 200 mm and 300 mm lines optimized for 0.35 µm-class and above, where i-line tools provide an attractive combination of resolution, depth of focus and cost of ownership. Canon’s FPA-5550iZ2 series, for example, is explicitly positioned as a low-CoO mix-and-match solution for logic, memory and CMOS image sensor fabrication on 200 mm/300 mm wafers, while Nikon’s NSR-2205iL1 i-line stepper targets applications ranging from logic and memory to SiC/GaN power devices and MEMS, emphasizing high throughput and wide process windows. In addition, i-line steppers are increasingly used in advanced packaging, panel-level and specialty substrate processing, where their large depth of focus, warpage tolerance and flexible wafer/panel handling enable cost-effective imaging on warped silicon or compound semiconductor wafers, glass and organic panels. Finally, in emerging markets, government policies that support localization and equipment self-reliance—notably in China and other regions building domestic semiconductor supply chains—are sustaining demand for non-EUV lithography, including i-line steppers, as a practical and controllable technology node for local production.
The i-line stepper market faces several structural challenges. Third, i-line tools operate amid tightening export controls and geopolitical uncertainty: US, Dutch and allied regulations increasingly constrain the export and servicing of certain lithography systems to China and other jurisdictions, adding licensing risk, delivery uncertainty and compliance costs even for some “legacy” DUV categories. Finally, customers expect continuous improvements in cost of ownership, uptime and sustainability, forcing vendors to invest in automation, diagnostics, energy-efficient optics and long-life light sources while managing strong cost pressure from mature-node fabs that benchmark i-line tools against lower-cost local equipment and refurbished imports.
On the technology side, i-line stepper development is moving along four main axes.
