SWIR is similar to visible light in that photons are reflected or absorbed by objects, providing the strong contrast needed for higher resolution imaging. Shortwave Infrared Imaging (SWIR) is an advanced technology used to generate images from radiation in regions of the electromagnetic spectrum that are invisible to the naked eye. At the same time, short-wave infrared imaging cameras can image through glass.
SWIR imaging with InGaAs-based sensors is ideal for non-destructive inspection of objects and their structures, coatings, and other features. SWIR images are starting to gain more and more importance in industrial machine vision for quality assessment. Commonly referred to as near-infrared (NIR) imagers, SWIR imagers can see objects and events that visual and thermal cameras cannot. They are smaller, lighter and cost much less than all other thermal imaging cameras. SWIR imaging cameras open up a wide range of possibilities for computer vision applications, as they can identify unseen component defects as well as desired properties. For example, during the bottle production phase, SWIR InGaAs cameras enable internal and external inspection of glass bottles. With the ability to thermally image hot objects between 250°C and 800°C, these cameras can monitor the temperature uniformity and cooling rate of the glass. As a result, manufacturers are able to continuously track output to optimize yield and efficiency.
