Black LiTaO3 & LiNbO3 wafers are specially processed crystal wafers. A LiTaO₃ (lithium tantalate) wafer is a thin slice of lithium tantalate crystal. Chemically, it consists of lithium (Li), tantalum (Ta), and oxygen (O) atoms. Structurally, it has a trigonal crystal system with a perovskite - like structure. The unit cell contains three formula units of LiTaO₃. A LiNbO₃ (lithium niobate) wafer is a slice of lithium niobate crystal. Chemically, it is composed of lithium (Li), niobium (Nb), and oxygen (O) atoms. Structurally, it has a trigonal crystal system similar to a perovskite - like structure. The unit cell contains six formula units of LiNbO₃. The blackening process has a significant impact on the optical, electrical, piezoelectric and electro-optical properties of the wafer. For example, the blackening process can reduce the pyroelectric effect and light transmittance of the wafer, and significantly improve the conductivity and blackening uniformity of the wafer.
