Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Waxes have emerged in recent years as a new category within the global wax industry. Belonging to the family of synthetic waxes, it is produced from natural gas, coal, or biomass through the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process to yield high-purity, linear hydrocarbons. Owing to its regular molecular structure, low impurity content, and stable performance, FT wax is widely used as a substitute for conventional petroleum-based products such as paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, and stearic acid.
After years of technological development, the global FT wax industry has formed a competitive landscape led by Sasol, Shell, and Shaanxi Weilai Energy Chemical. Together, these three companies account for over 70% of global market revenue in 2024. Sasol maintains leadership through its mature low-temperature slurry-phase process and gas-to-liquid (GTL) route; Shell focuses on high-purity waxes for premium industrial applications; while Chinese producers leverage coal-to-syngas routes to achieve cost and scale advantages.
