It is easily soluble in polar solvents such as water, ethanol and propylene glycol, and insoluble in non-polar solvents such as chloroform, acetone and benzene. It is easy to decompose when the pH is greater than 8 and high temperature, and will produce yellow color when exposed to light, which has a corrosive effect on aluminum materials. Bronopol is a bromo-nitroalcohol broad-spectrum fungicide with high bactericidal activity, low concentration and a wide pH range. It is non-irritating to human skin and has no allergic reaction. It is one of the cosmetic preservatives approved by the US FDA. It is mainly used as a preservative and bactericide in cosmetics, and can effectively prevent and treat a variety of plant pathogenic bacteria.
2-Bromo-2-Nitro-1,3-Propanediol Advantages:
(1) Efficient. It has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and can inhibit the growth of most bacteria at a concentration of 25ppm, and is more effective against Gram-negative bacteria and various types of Pseudomonas;
(2) Less dosage and low price. In cosmetics, the dosage of 2-Bromo-2-Nitro-1,3-Propanediol is generally 0.01~0.05%, which is one-tenth of the commonly used preservatives in cosmetics, paraben esters, and the cost of use is more than half cheaper than paraben vinegar;
(3) Good compatibility performance. Nutrients such as protein and various cationic, anionic and nonionic surfactants will not affect the antibacterial effect of bronopol;
(4) Suitable pH value range. 2-Bromo-2-Nitro-1,3-Propanediol is effective in the pH range of 4 to 9, that is, in weakly acidic, neutral and alkaline environments, bronopol can maintain a strong antibacterial effect after being added;
(5) Good water solubility and easy to use. 2-Bromo-2-Nitro-1,3-Propanediol is easily soluble in water, with a solubility of 25g in water at 25°C, making it extremely convenient to use.

Upstream raw materials: nitromethane, formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde, liquid bromine or brominating agent, caustic soda, some routes also use calcium chloride, solvents and extraction agents, etc.

Application:
Cosmetic fungicides:
Bronopol has an inhibitory effect on bacteria, molds, and yeasts, but has poor inhibitory activity against molds and yeasts. Use in combination with paraben can enhance the inhibitory effect on molds and yeasts. Its recommended concentration in cosmetics is 0.02%. In cosmetics, as a preservative, it is mainly used in medicated skin creams, medicated shampoos, baby baths, etc.
Water treatment biocides:
Bronopol can be compounded with compounds such as cationic polyquaternary ammonium salts to form a new type of bactericide. It can be added to industrial cooling water, pulp and paper manufacturing water treatment to improve the bactericidal effect and completely prevent the formation of Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Petroleum industry fungicides:
The solid bactericide made of bronopol and surfactant into strips and blocks can control the growth of microorganisms in oil well water, and can be dispersed and dissolved in water but not dissolved in oil. Therefore, it can enter the water layer at the bottom of the oil system to kill bacteria, thereby effectively inhibiting the corrosion of metal workpieces.
Deodorant:
Toilet air deodorizers based on bronopol can not only kill fungi and scale insects at very low concentrations, but can also effectively remove ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans in toilet air and water. Since bronopol is odorless and cheap, deodorants using it as a bactericide can not only be used in household toilets, but also in deodorizing liquids for unpleasant odors in garbage disposal.
Pharmaceutical industry:
In addition to being used as a topical bactericide in the pharmaceutical industry, bronopol can also be used as a preservative for oral medication for the treatment of gastritis; using bronopol as a bactericide in mastitis formulas can effectively kill Staphylococcus aureus and thereby control mastitis.
Other areas:
