PV (pervaporation) and VP (vapor permeation) membranes are typically produced in a "three-stage" model: Selective-layer fabrication—polymeric suppliers (e.g., PVA, PI, PDMS, PEBA) often use dope preparation, casting/phase inversion, crosslinking, hollow-fiber spinning, and composite coating; inorganic routes (zeolite/ceramic) focus on support forming, seeding/hydrothermal growth, calcination, and defect healing. Module standardization—membranes are packaged into spiral-wound, plate-and-frame, tubular, or hollow-fiber modules with validated sealing, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. System integration—vacuum or sweep-gas design, condensation/recovery, pretreatment, and controls are configured into skid systems, supported by membrane replacement and O&M services. Gross margins generally rise with value-added along the chain: membrane materials and standard modules ~25%–55%, potentially higher for proprietary chemistries/structures; turnkey skid systems and project delivery ~20%–45%, depending on customization and procurement volatility. Upstream includes polymers/monomers, solvents/additives, reinforcements (nonwovens/scrims), ceramic/alumina supports and zeolite precursors, plus vacuum, heat-exchange, condensation, and instrumentation components. Midstream covers membrane making, module assembly, and performance QA.
