Column-layer chromatographic silica gel can also be chemically bonded to create functionalized stationary phases (C18, C8, phenyl, amino, cyano, etc.) by reacting the surface silanol groups with organosilane reagents; these bonded phases convert the inherently polar silica surface into controlled hydrophobic or selective interaction surfaces and form the dominant reversed-phase media used in modern HPLC and preparative purification.
In 2024, global production of chromatography-grade column-layer silica gel was on the order of 73.40 metric tons, at an average realized selling price of about 2,363 USD per kilogram. This very high unit price, compared with bulk desiccant silica gel, is explained by the product’s extremely tight particle size distribution, high chemical purity (often >99.9% SiO₂ with controlled trace metals), mechanical robustness under high-pressure liquid flow, and strict lot-to-lot reproducibility required in regulated pharmaceutical, biotech, and high-value fine chemicals purification workflows.
The supply chain for column-layer chromatographic silica gel is vertically specialized. Upstream, high-purity silica is produced from sodium silicate / silica sol precursors via controlled sol–gel chemistry to form porous silica matrices with defined pore sizes (for example 60 Å, 100 Å, 120 Å) and high specific surface area (often 400–600 m²/g).
This upstream step is typically run by advanced inorganic/functional silica producers such as Osaka Soda, Fuji Silysia Chemical, AGC Si-Tech, Zeochem, and Nouryon, who have deep process control over porosity, pore volume, and impurity profile. Midstream, the raw porous silica is sized (for example <10 µm, 10–30 µm, >30 µm classes) and shaped: irregular fractured particles for traditional flash/gravity columns, or spray-formed / sol–gel–spheroidized spherical particles with high mechanical strength for high-pressure liquid chromatography and scalable preparative columns. At this stage the silica surface may be further functionalized (C18, C8, phenyl, amino, diol, ion-exchange, etc.) and endcapped to reduce residual silanol activity, creating families of bonded phases with defined selectivity. Downstream, companies such as YMC, Merck (Sigma Aldrich / Supelco), Sorbent Technologies, and NanoMicro Technologies pack these engineered silica gels into analytical HPLC columns, UHPLC columns, flash cartridges, and process-scale preparative columns. The downstream step is where the commercial SKU is defined: suppliers qualify mechanical stability, plate count / efficiency, selectivity, metal impurity profile, and reproducibility; issue Certificates of Analysis and lot traceability; and sell branded columns or bulk packing media instead of commodity powder. This technical differentiation, plus qualification in regulated pharmaceutical and biopharma workflows, is what drives pricing power and margin, rather than volume alone.
Demand for column-layer chromatographic silica gel is concentrated in a few application clusters with very high regulatory or purity pressure.
