Currently, the mainstream process has shifted from the traditional acetic acid cracking (ketene method) to the more cost-effective methanol carbonylation method. This means that fluctuations in the price of raw materials such as coal or natural gas directly affect the production cost of acetic anhydride.In 2025, global sales are projected to be approximately 2.53 million tons, with an average market price of around US$611 per ton. The industry's gross profit margin is in the range of 10%–25%.

Diversified downstream demand growth is the core driving force. Downstream demand is highly concentrated in cellulose acetate systems (such as cigarette filter tow, textile fibers, films/sheets, etc.), and extends to bulk applications such as detergent bleaching activators (TAED); in the pharmaceutical sector, it is represented by products such as aspirin and acetaminophen. The product itself has strong reactivity and corrosive/irritating characteristics, requiring high standards for equipment airtightness, drying conditions, materials, and safety and environmental management.
