Compared with traditional single-point force/torque sensors at the end-effector of industrial robots, humanoid tactile sensors emphasize high-density arrays, compliance, and large-area coverage, allowing the robot to obtain human-like tactile feedback when handling everyday objects, assisting dressing and caregiving, or performing complex assembly tasks, thereby greatly improving robustness and safety in physical interaction.
In the value chain, humanoid robot tactile sensors occupy a midstream position between advanced sensor technologies and humanoid robot platforms. Upstream suppliers provide flexible substrates (flex PCBs, PI/PET films), elastomer materials such as silicone, polyurethane, and thermoplastic elastomers, conductive rubber and inks, piezoresistive or piezoelectric films, magnetic or optical components, microcontrollers and interface ICs, as well as connectors, cables, and encapsulation adhesives. Midstream players are companies specializing in tactile sensor design and module packaging, along with in-house sensor teams within humanoid robot manufacturers. They design tactile units and arrays, select sensing materials and electrode structures, develop flexible packaging processes, implement communication protocols and driver algorithms, and integrate tactile modules into fingertips, palms, forearms, torso, and feet, which are then fused with the robot’s joint actuators and high-level control system.
