A Gravity Energy Storage Facility is a large-scale infrastructure system designed to store and release electrical energy by lifting and lowering heavy masses using gravitational force. The facility typically includes vertical shafts, cranes or winches, massive weights (such as concrete blocks or steel modules), motors, and generators. During times of surplus electricity (often from renewables like wind or solar), electric motors lift the weights to store potential energy. When demand rises, the system releases the weights, converting the descending motion into electricity via regenerative drives or generators.
These facilities are a promising alternative to conventional storage like batteries or pumped hydro, offering long operational life, minimal degradation, fast response, and sustainability. They are well-suited for grid-scale energy storage, frequency regulation, and helping balance intermittent renewable sources.
With the increasing dependence on renewable energy such as wind and solar energy, solving the uncertainty and indirectness of its production has become a key issue that cannot be ignored. In order to be able to achieve uninterrupted power supply, Energy Vault first developed a gravity energy storage system, which has better performance and lower costs than pumped water storage and lithium battery storage.
