An organ-on-a-chip (OOC) is a multi-channel 3-D microfluidic cell culture, integrated circuit (chip) that simulates the activities, mechanics and physiological response of an entire organ or an organ system, a type of artificial organ.It constitutes the subject matter of significant biomedical engineering research, more precisely in bio-MEMS. The convergence of labs-on-chips (LOCs) and cell biology has permitted the study of human physiology in an organ-specific context, introducing a novel model of in vitro multicellular human organisms. Microchip 3D cell culture is an advanced cell culture technology, which uses the combination of microfluidic chip technology and three-dimensional cell culture technology to simulate the three-dimensional environment of cell growth in organisms. This technique is widely used in biomedical research and drug development. Traditional cell culture techniques are usually carried out on a two-dimensional plane, however, cell growth in vivo is often carried out in a three-dimensional space. Therefore, in order to more accurately simulate the in vivo environment, microchip 3D cell culture technology has emerged. The technology suspends cells within tiny three-dimensional structures, allowing cells to grow and interact under conditions that more closely resemble real environments. This technique could provide a more realistic three-dimensional environment, allowing cells to grow and interact in more natural conditions, better mimicking what happens in living organisms. Microchip technology allows a large number of cell culture experiments to be performed simultaneously on tiny chips, enabling high-throughput cell research and drug screening. Microchip 3D cell culture technology is applicable to a variety of cell types, including tumor cells, organ-specific cells, etc.
