Traditionally, the most commonly used BP material is graphite, both natural as well as synthetic, because it has excellent chemical stability to survive the fuel cell environ-ment. It also has very low resistivity, resulting in highest electro chemical power output. However, it is fraught with problems of high cost, low mechanical strength and the need for machining to form the flow channels.
In a fuel cell, the graphite bipolar plate is a crucial component within the fuel cell stack. It performs several vital functions: conducting electrons between adjacent cells, distributing hydrogen fuel and air (or oxygen) to the electrodes through flow channels etched into its surface, and separating the individual cells to prevent gas crossover. Graphite, often in composite form, is chosen for its good electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance in the fuel cell environment, and relatively low cost.
