In 2024, driven by the demand for high-nickel positive electrodes and 4680 large cylinders for power batteries, carbon-coated foil for lithium batteries has changed from an "optional process" to a "mass production necessity": leading companies have reduced the surface density to less than 8 g/m² through the ultra-thin 4.5 μm copper foil + double-sided 1 μm carbon layer solution, helping battery cell manufacturers to increase the cycle life by 8-10% while maintaining energy density, and relying on the carbon layer pore gradient design to suppress the expansion of silicon-carbon negative electrodes, pushing the penetration rate of carbon-coated copper foil from less than 15% last year to 25-30% rapidly; upstream carbon black and CNT slurry are still controlled by foreign manufacturers, resulting in limited bargaining power for domestic carbon-coated foil manufacturers, but with the self-built carbon slurry production lines of aluminum foil giants such as Dingsheng and Wanshun, it is expected that the cost of carbon slurry can be reduced by another 20% in 2025. At the same time, 4680 and lithium iron phosphate start-stop batteries will increase the copper foil substrate from 6 μm to 3.5 Below μm, the technical threshold is further raised. If the second-tier foil factories cannot make breakthroughs in carbon layer adhesion and winding yield, they will be squeezed out of the high-end supply chain, and the industry will present a vertical integration pattern of "aluminum foil giant + battery factory joint venture".
