MLCC External Electrode Paste is a thick-film conductive cermet paste used to form the external terminations of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). It typically consists of silver (Ag), silver–palladium (Ag–Pd) or copper (Cu) metal powders combined with glass frit and an organic vehicle containing polymer binders, solvents and rheology modifiers. The paste is applied to the chip ends—by dipping, array coating or printing—on sintered MLCC bodies, and then fired to create adherent, solderable termination layers that provide electrical connection to the buried internal electrodes, mechanical anchoring to the ceramic body, and a suitable base for subsequent Ni barrier and Sn/SnAg plating.
Demand for MLCC external electrode paste is primarily driven by the continuous upgrade of termination structures toward miniaturization, high reliability and robust solderability. As end applications expand from traditional consumer electronics into automotive, industrial, 5G communications and power/server systems, requirements for bend strength, thermal shock resistance and long lifetime are steadily increasing. This, in turn, drives the adoption of flexible terminations, high-adhesion Ag/Ag–Pd/Cu thick-film pastes, and formulations that are tightly matched to subsequent Ni/Sn plating processes. At the same time, the transition from precious-metal systems to BME structures (Ni inner electrode + Cu/Ag termination + Ni/Sn plating) reduces Pd consumption and unit capacitance cost, but also raises demands on the firing window, oxidation resistance and metal–glass synergy of termination pastes, making high-performance Cu pastes and low-Pd Ag–Pd pastes key levers for material upgrading. In addition, MLCC capacity is highly concentrated in Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan, where leading manufacturers seek to mitigate material supply risk and shorten development cycles by partnering deeply with a limited number of termination-paste suppliers capable of formulation co-development and on-line technical support, thereby amplifying growth in this niche segment on top of overall MLCC expansion.
