The opening and closing mechanism includes a solid plastic ball (CPVC/PVDF), a hinged disc (PTFE or the same plastic) or a spring-loaded disc (the spring is usually SS316 stainless steel), and sealing materials (EPDM, FKM/Viton or PTFF gaskets, accounting for 10-15% of the cost). The connection method determines the amount of metal inserts used. Threaded/socket types only require a small number of stainless steel fasteners, while flange types require a metal flange skeleton for reinforcement. The cost structure exhibits a significant material tiering characteristic: general-purpose PVC/PP check valves, due to the low price of raw materials (PVC approximately $1-2/kg) and the ability to be efficiently injection molded, have a total cost that is only 30-50% of that of metal (stainless steel) valves of the same specifications. High-performance PVDF check valves, however, due to the higher unit price of materials ($15-30/kg) and the need for precision machining, have a cost approaching that of stainless steel valves. Despite this, they command a premium in the semiconductor and chemical industries due to their superior chemical resistance (withstanding strong corrosive media such as concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and halogens), and are typically 3-5 times more expensive than PVC/PP valves. Furthermore, spring-loaded check valves, due to the added metal spring and precision valve seat machining, cost 20-30% more than ball/swing check valves, but offer the added value of installation in any position and water hammer protection.
