Aerospace carbon fiber refers to high-performance PAN- or pitch-based carbon fibers that are specifically qualified for aircraft, spacecraft and defense structures, with stringent requirements on tensile strength, modulus, damage tolerance, defect levels and traceability. These fibers are predominantly small-tow (<24k filaments) grades used in primary and secondary aerostructures (fuselage, wings, empennage, nacelles) and space structures, where weight saving and fatigue resistance are critical.
On the upstream side, aerospace carbon fibers are produced mainly from high-purity PAN precursor (for most grades) and mesophase pitch (for ultra-high-modulus fibers), plus energy-intensive oxidation and carbonization/graphitization processes, followed by surface treatment and resin-specific sizing. Downstream, these fibers are converted into prepregs, fabrics and RTM tapes that are used in commercial and business aircraft, military fighters and helicopters, UAVs, launch vehicles and satellites.
In 2024, global sales of aerospace carbon fibers reached approximately 24 K tons, with an average global market price of around US$54.7/kg. Production capacity varies significantly among manufacturers, with gross profit margins ranging from approximately 30% to 60%.
From a market-structure perspective, aerospace carbon fiber sits at the high-end of the global carbon-fiber industry, concentrated in a relatively small group of qualified suppliers but capturing a disproportionately large share of value. The material has moved from niche use in control surfaces and secondary parts to widespread application in fuselage barrels, wing boxes, tail structures, nacelles and increasingly engines and interiors. Carbon fiber is the leading fiber type in terms of value within aerospace composites, and that the share of composite structures in new aircraft programs continues to rise as OEMs pursue aggressive weight reduction and higher structural efficiency.
Demand is primarily pulled by three forces. First, airlines and regulators are pushing for lower fuel burn and lower life-cycle emissions, which directly promotes higher composite content and therefore higher consumption of aerospace-grade carbon fiber; fuel efficiency, range extension and emissions compliance are the core drivers for carbon-fiber adoption. Second, there is a broad wave of fleet renewal and rate ramp-ups in commercial aviation, along with new defense programs and the emergence of advanced air-mobility platforms; these programs tend to be designed around composite-rich wings, high-aspect-ratio structures and highly integrated fuselage sections, all of which rely heavily on small-tow aerospace carbon fibers. Third, technology roadmaps highlight the shift toward thermoplastic composites, higher-temperature resins and more automated manufacturing, which all preserve or increase the role of carbon fiber as the primary reinforcement, even as processing routes evolve.
