GPONS offer up to a 1:64 ratio on a single fiber. As opposed to a standard copper wire in most networks, GPON"s are 95% more energy efficient.
A Gigabyte Passive Optical Network (GPON) is a broadband telecommunications technology that uses passive optical fiber to provide high-speed data, voice, and video services. GPON is a type of passive optical network (PON) that enables the transmission of data through fiber optic cables using a point-to-multipoint architecture.
In GPON, a central office device called an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is responsible for transmitting and receiving data to and from multiple customer premises equipment called Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). The OLT aggregates the data from multiple ONUs and delivers it to the service provider"s core network.
GPON supports symmetrical and asymmetrical data transfer rates, typically ranging from 622 Mbps up to 2.488 Gbps downstream and 155 Mbps upstream. This allows users to engage in bandwidth-intensive activities like high-definition video streaming, online gaming, and cloud-based applications.
The passive nature of GPON means that the network does not require any active electronic components between the OLT and the ONUs. Instead, it uses passive splitters to divide the optical signal into multiple paths, allowing multiple ONUs to share the same fiber without the need for dedicated fibers to each customer.
GPON offers several advantages, including high bandwidth capacity, long-distance transmission capabilities, increased security due to the use of fiber optics, and scalability to support a large number of users. It is widely used by internet service providers (ISPs) and telecommunications companies to deliver fiber-optic broadband services to residential, commercial, and enterprise customers.
