Thermoplastic gate valves are valves made primarily of thermoplastic plastics (such as PVC-U, CPVC, PP, PVDF, etc.) for the valve body. They open and close via a gate (wedge-shaped or parallel) that moves up and down along a path perpendicular to the flow direction. When fully open, the flow path is straight and unobstructed, with minimal flow resistance. They are primarily used for fully open-to-fully-closed shut-off of corrosive media rather than for flow regulation.
The raw materials for thermoplastic gate valves are mainly thermoplastic valve bodies (PVC-U/CPVC/PP accounting for 70-90% of the valve body weight, PVDF is used for high-end and highly corrosive applications), with the gate (solid wedge or parallel type, usually made of the same material as the valve body or with PTFE coating to enhance sealing) and the valve stem (small diameters can use the same plastic, while DN50 and above mostly use SS316 stainless steel to withstand opening and closing torque) forming the core moving parts. They are supplemented by sealing packing (PTFE or EPDM/FKM O-rings) and metal inserts (steel flanges or threaded inserts for flange connections, accounting for 5-15% of the total weight). Because gate valves need to ensure a precise fit between the gate and the valve seat (high requirements for flatness and roughness), high-performance materials such as PVDF often need to be CNC machined rather than simply injection molded, which increases material waste. In terms of cost structure, general-purpose PVC-U gate valves (DN15-50) have a lower raw material cost (approximately $1-2/kg) and can be injection molded, resulting in a total cost that is only 30-50% of that of cast iron/stainless steel gate valves of the same specifications, but higher than ball valves of the same material (due to structural complexity). High-performance PVDF gate valves (especially DN100 and above) have a higher material cost ($15-30/kg) and require a metal flange reinforcement (to prevent plastic creep from causing seal failure), making their cost close to that of stainless steel valves, but they still retain the advantage of resistance to strong acids/halogens, and their price is 3-5 times higher than PVC-U gate valves. Furthermore, non-rising stem valves have a 10-15% higher cost than rising stem valves due to the high precision requirements for valve stem thread machining, but are more suitable for installation in space-constrained plastic pipe wells.
