High-purity scandium usually refers to a type of high-value dispersed metal product with a purity of 99.9% or higher, mainly composed of high-purity scandium oxide (Sc2O3) and metallic scandium. Compared with ordinary scandium raw materials, it has extremely strict limits on impurities such as iron, nickel, copper, calcium, sodium, and radioactive impurities. It is mainly used as a key trace doping element or precursor for Al Sc light alloys, metal halide lamp luminescent materials, optical and electronic ceramics, and various new functional materials.In 2024, global High-purity Scandium production reached approximately 23 Ton, with an average global market price of around US$ 2,136 per kg.
The annual production capacity of high-purity scandium is 35 tons. Affected by factors such as highly dispersed scandium resources, complex raw material pre-treatment, high wet refining and environmental protection costs, and high product added value, the overall gross profit margin of high-purity scandium is roughly between 30% and 45%. The upstream raw materials mainly include scandium-containing raw materials (later nickel ore smelting intermediates, titanium dioxide, rare earth tailings, etc.), acid-base systems such as sulfuric acid/hydrochloric acid/fluorosilicic acid, extraction agents and stripping reagents, precipitants and auxiliary materials for roasting; downstream, it connects with Al–Sc light alloy companies, metal halide lamps and luminescent materials factories, electronic ceramics and functional materials companies, as well as universities and scientific research institutions, and is used in high-end fields such as alloy addition, lighting sources, optoelectronic and ceramic functional materials and new material research and development. From a cost structure perspective, the purchase of scandium-containing raw materials and intermediate products usually accounts for 35% to 50% of the total cost, while fine chemicals such as acids and alkalis, extraction agents and precipitants, and roasting energy account for about 20% to 30%. The rest are period costs such as depreciation of wet methods and roasting equipment, environmental protection and waste treatment, labor and quality testing, as well as process development, customer certification and inventory management.
High purity scandium is in a typical state of "small volume, high unit price, and high barriers". On one hand, it is constrained by the dispersion of upstream resources, difficult extraction, conflicting minerals, and environmental constraints, resulting in tight supply and price fluctuations. On the other hand, it is continuously driven by high-end demands such as Al Sc light alloy weight reduction, advanced lighting and display, solid electrolyte, and new material research and development. The overall demand is slowly increasing, but the structure is constantly upgrading towards aerospace, 3D printing high-strength aluminum alloys, energy-saving light sources, and high-end functional ceramics, and the industry concentration is shifting towards integrated enterprises that master resources and wet refining technology.
