A second stream supplies acid catalysts for free-fatty-acid (FFA) esterification (sulfuric, solid acids, sulfonated resins), while specialty manufacturers produce heterogeneous/base catalysts (CaO/MgO/mixed oxides, hydrotalcites, alkaline zeolites), bifunctional solids for simultaneous esterification/transesterification, and enzymatic (lipase) systems for difficult waste fats. Midstream formulators blend and stabilize these catalysts, package in bulk/IBCs with safety systems (nitrogen blanketing for alkoxides), and provide ancillary reagents (adsorbents, ion-exchange resins, magnesia/bleaching earth) and modular skids. Downstream, biodiesel (FAME) producers apply acid pretreatment to high-FFA feedstocks (used cooking oil, tallow, DCO), then base-catalyzed transesterification with methanol to meet fuel specs, followed by glycerin recovery/purification and wastewater treatment.
