Some reflective encoder designs are “modular” (a small PCB plus a code wheel integrated into the customer’s mechanism), while others are packaged assemblies. A common output is incremental A/B quadrature pulses for motion and direction; many systems also add an index pulse that marks a reference position. Increasingly, reflective encoders are also built as absolute encoders, where each angular position corresponds to a unique pattern that is translated into a digital code, so the system knows position directly instead of counting pulses from a start point.
In terms of where reflective optical encoders are used, demand comes from any system that needs precise motion information but also cares about size, packaging simplicity, or integration into a tight mechanical envelope. Typical examples include servo motors and actuators, industrial robots and cobots, CNC and factory automation axes, medical devices with controlled motion, and compact consumer or light industrial mechanisms. The reflective approach is also attractive in designs where placing electronics on both sides of a disc is inconvenient, or where a compact “single-sided” sensor module reduces wiring and assembly steps.
