These dispersants typically adsorb on the surface of solid particles through electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding or specific chemical anchoring, and provide electrostatic repulsion and/or steric hindrance, thereby enabling homogeneous dispersion, controllable rheology and stable coating quality of lithium-ion battery electrodes.
The primary market driver for dispersants for lithium-ion battery electrodes is the rapid growth of electric vehicles, energy storage systems and high-end consumer electronics, which continuously pushes manufacturers toward higher energy density, longer cycle life and more stable manufacturing yields. To achieve these targets, electrode slurries are shifting to higher solid content, finer particle sizes, and more complex multi-component formulations, all of which significantly increase the requirement for robust dispersion and slurry stability. A second driver is the accelerated adoption of water-based and environmentally friendly electrode processes, especially for anodes and LFP-type cathodes. Water-based systems impose stricter constraints on viscosity control, long-term slurry stability and metal ion impurity levels, creating strong demand for advanced polymeric dispersants (such as LiPAA, LiCMC, polysaccharides and phosphate-based dispersants) that can provide efficient dispersion while maintaining electrochemical compatibility and low impurity content. A third driver comes from the emergence of new materials, including high-nickel layered oxides, silicon-based anodes, high-surface-area conductive carbons and CNT-based networks. These materials are often more difficult to disperse and more sensitive to interface chemistry, which makes tailored dispersant packages an essential lever for enabling high loading, high compaction density and fast-charging capability without sacrificing cycle life and safety performance.
