The base polyphenylene sulfide polymer is produced by condensation of p-dichlorobenzene (or related aryl halides) with a sulfiding agent (typically sodium sulfide) in a polar solvent (e.g., N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone), so the main upstream feedstocks are aromatic chlorides, sulfur/sulfide reagents, solvents and reinforcing fillers/additives used for compounding. Downstream, modified polyphenylene sulfide is mainly consumed by automotive (under-the-hood parts, fuel/electrical systems and, increasingly, EV high-voltage components), electrical/electronic connectors and housings, industrial pumps/valves, filters and specialty molded parts where high temperature, chemical and dimensional stability are required. Typical new compounding/production lines built by major suppliers are on the order of ~5,000–20,000 metric tonnes per year per line.
