THF is an important raw material for organic synthesis and a high-performance solvent. It is primarily used in the synthesis of polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF), as a reaction raw material or solvent for adhesives, inks, resins, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and extractants. It is widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, pesticide, textile, and laboratory industries. The mainstream production method for THF in modern industry is the BDO dehydration cyclization process, where high-purity BDO is dehydrated and refined under specific reaction conditions to produce THF.
The commercial supply of THF is primarily derived from the BDO dehydration cyclization process, with a smaller portion produced from recycled and refined waste THF or depolymerized low-polymerization polytetrahydrofuran. BDO dehydration cyclization production companies are categorized by raw materials and technical routes, including direct production using high-purity BDO, using PBT/PBAT byproducts, and LBDO purification. Both the direct production of high-purity BDO and the PBT/PBAT byproduct methods utilize high-concentration, authentic BDO as their raw material. Currently, using PBT/PBAT byproducts is the most mainstream production method for commodity THF, accounting for over 50% of the total domestic supply. Major manufacturers include Changchun Chemical, Kanghui New Materials, and Kingfa Technology. With stricter environmental regulations and growing awareness of environmental protection, the LBDO purification process for producing THF is gaining popularity. This route uses LBDO, a byproduct of BDO production and utilization, or crude processed products as raw materials. While ensuring effective pollutant control capabilities, it achieves resource recycling while offering environmental advantages and low costs, leading to increasing competitiveness within the industry.
Currently, the primary application areas for tetrahydrofuran products are PTMEG and its downstream spandex, followed by solvents and pharmaceutical intermediates. Most PTMEG manufacturers operate an integrated THF-PTMEG-spandex supply chain, and their THF products rarely enter the circulating market. Spandex, with its excellent properties for improving fabric elasticity and maintaining shape, is suitable for manufacturing high-strength, high-performance clothing. With the recent adjustments and optimizations in global clothing consumption, the market for clothing with high spandex content is expected to continue to expand.
