Iron-chromium Flow Batteries were pioneered and extensively researched by NASA in the 1970s and 1980s and by Mitsui in Japan. The FeCr flow battery is a redox flow battery (RFB). Energy is stored by using Fe2+ – Fe3+ and Cr2+ – Cr3+ redox couples. The active chemicals are always completely dissolved in the aqueous electrolyte. Like other true RFBs, the power and energy ratings of the FeCr system are independent of each other and can be optimized individually for each application.

The iron-chromium flow battery energy storage technology is known as one of the longest and safest electrochemical energy storage technologies. The electrolyte solution of this technology is an aqueous solution, which will not explode, and can realize power and capacity on demand. Flexible customization, and has the advantages of long cycle life, good stability, easy recycling, wide operating temperature range, low cost, etc., and fully meets my country"s large-scale, long-term energy storage needs of a new type of power system. At present, the main manufacturer in the global market is China State Power Investment Corporation, and the core production area is China. Iron-chromium flow batteries are currently used in energy storage systems.
