There is increasing attention to perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer goods. Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of artificially synthesized chemicals that are restricted in multiple countries. Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) refer to organic compounds containing at least one perfluorocarbon atom (i.e., containing at least one - CF2- or - CF3- aliphatic chain structural unit). Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOS), and numerous other compounds. Some PFAS, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOS), can persist in the human body for a long time and have negative effects on human health. Animal studies have shown that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOS) can affect reproduction and development, liver and kidneys, as well as the immune system. Both chemicals cause tumors.
Adding a small amount of fluorine surfactant can reduce the surface tension of substances, improve emulsification and surface activity. Based on this characteristic, fluorine surfactant is widely used in various industrial fields such as detergents, coatings, and industrial products. However, due to the potential environmental risks associated with the use of fluorine based surfactants, discussions are currently underway in Europe and America to restrict PFAS. At the same time, there is strong demand from all parties to develop alternative products. On March 22, 2023, authorities from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden submitted a proposal to ECHA to restrict PFAS for a period of six months, with a consultation deadline of September 25, 2023. On September 26, 2023, at the end of the consultation on September 25, ECHA received over 5600 comments from more than 4400 organizations, companies, and individuals. More than 4400 organizations, companies, and individuals have submitted comments and information on proposals to restrict perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the European Economic Area. June 22, 2023- The ECHA Socio Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC) has adopted the final opinion, which supports the gradual prohibition of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in fire foam. This restriction can reduce the emission of PFAS to the environment by about 13200 tons within 30 years. According to the latest investigation by Japanese media in November 2023, some residents in Osaka Prefecture have high levels of organic fluorine compounds in their blood, posing a threat to their health. Investigators analyzed that this may be related to excessive levels of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances in local rivers and groundwater.
