Seawater batteries utilize saltwater as a source for converting electrical energy and chemical energy. It is more cost-effective than a lithium-ion battery. The seawater's abundant sodium is used as charge transfer ions. The world is slowly shifting towards sustainable energy storage. Most conventional batteries like lithium-ion release toxic gases and hazardous chemical compounds. A viable alternative is necessary for energy storage technology. This will augment the growth of the seawater battery market in the forthcoming years. A typical rechargeable battery contains an organic and aqueous electrolyte side separated by a solid sodium diffusion membrane. The toxicity and flammability of other conventional batteries are shifting the focus on seawater batteries. The concentrated solution is made from salt and water which makes it less harmful. They are extremely durable and longer lasting. The recycling procedure is simple. As sodium is abundantly available it provides a low-cost solution for energy storage. A single charge can power up the battery for quite some time and full discharge of the stored electricity is obtained without efficiency. The market is still in its nascent stage but will provide exciting opportunities in the future.  

Research and development

Government authorities around the world are pouring investments into the rapid development of solid-state batteries. The inherent toxic solvent is replaced by zinc magnesium nano alloy to form the battery’s anode for generating the electrons that travel to the cathode. The solvent is durable, robust, and remains stable through long charge and discharge cycles. It is eco-friendly and less hazardous than other toxic elements. These exciting initiatives will bolster the growth of the seawater battery market in the upcoming years. On the other hand batteries for UAVs are being made that enable them to be deployed in the remote oceanic environment. Current UAVs are not capable enough for remote naval navigation as the batteries are large and have limited shelf life. However, research teams have developed a floating system and hybrid seawater batteries for powering the electric motor of the UAV. The motors drive the propellers that provide the required lift for the UAV to rise higher and maintain flight. The inside chemical reacts with the seawater upon landing for drawing in the sodium and expelling the waste products out of the system. The motor can be repeatedly recharged by the battery. 

Lack of commercialization due to barriers

Seawater and solid-state batteries are still the technology of the future. There are a number of issues present in the market. The C rate or the amount of current or charge the battery release during its discharge cycle is applicably low. They cannot supply a large amount of electricity for a shorter period of time. This will hamper the demand for the seawater battery market in the forthcoming years. The storage capacity is less with limited space and energy density.
