Typical components include wing covers and spars, fuselage barrels and panels, tailplanes and fin boxes, floor beams and interior floor panels, nacelles and engine fan cases, and rotorcraft blades. Modern long-range aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 use CFRP extensively in wings and fuselage to cut structural weight, reduce part count and enable more aerodynamic shapes.
Upstream, aircraft CFRP components are based predominantly on high-strength or intermediate-modulus PAN-based carbon fibers (with some pitch-based grades for very high modulus), combined with aerospace-qualified epoxy, toughened epoxy, BMI, cyanate ester or high-temperature thermoplastic matrices such as PEEK, PEKK and PPS. Downstream, aerostructure manufacturers integrate these materials into large CFRP assemblies—wings, fuselage sections, empennage, nacelles and primary doors—which are then delivered to OEMs for final airframe integration and certification on commercial, regional, business and military aircraft.
