It is the third most commonly added amino acid in feed, after methionine and lysine. As a feed additive, it promotes feeding, reduces stress responses, improves sleep, increases antibodies in fetuses and young animals, enhances lactation in dairy animals, reduces the amount of high-quality protein in the diet, and reduces feed costs. The production of L-tryptophan initially relied mainly on chemical synthesis and protein hydrolysis, but with the continuous advancement of science and technology, the microbial method of producing L-tryptophan has become practical and dominant.
