The resin is partially cured (B-stage for thermosets) or fully melt-processable (for thermoplastics), giving the prepreg controlled tack, drape, and out-life so it can be accurately placed by hand lay-up or automated processes such as automated fiber placement and tape laying. Aerospace prepregs are engineered to deliver high specific stiffness and strength, excellent fatigue and impact performance, and strict fire, smoke, and toxicity compliance, while also meeting certification and reproducibility requirements of civil and military aviation, rotorcraft, business jets, UAVs, eVTOL aircraft, and launch vehicles. By integrating fiber and matrix into a semi-finished intermediate, aerospace prepregs enable consistent laminate quality, lower defect rates, and optimized processing routes compared with traditional wet lay-up or infusion systems.
The aerospace prepreg market is undergoing structural change as it moves from a relatively low-volume, program-specific business to a more industrialized, platform-driven ecosystem that must support increasing build rates, new aircraft architectures, and stronger cost and sustainability constraints.
