Indium phosphide (InP) epitaxy is a specialized process used to grow high-quality crystalline layers of indium phosphide material on a substrate, typically for applications in advanced optoelectronics and high-speed communication devices. Using methods like metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) or molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), precise control is achieved over the thickness, composition, and doping of the layers to tailor their electronic and optical properties. InP epitaxial structures are essential for manufacturing devices such as laser diodes, photodetectors, and high-frequency transistors, offering superior performance in terms of efficiency, speed, and reliability. Its application is crucial in industries like telecommunications, data centers, and sensing technologies, where InP enables the development of cutting-edge photonic and electronic systems.
In terms of consumption, North America is currently the world's largest consumer market, accounting for 33.37% of the market share in 2023, followed by Europe and China, accounting for 27.30% and 22.42% respectively.
At present, the real driving force of the InP wafer market lies in photonic applications. In optical communications, InP provides high performance in many functions such as emission, detection, modulation, and mixing, but due to its high cost, InP is often challenged by other semiconductor technologies. Optical modules are the core components of optical communications. It is an interface module that realizes information transmission between devices through photoelectric conversion. It is mainly used in communication base stations and data centers. Indium phosphide substrates are used to manufacture lasers and receivers in optical modules. 5G communication is a new generation of high-speed, low-latency, large-connection broadband mobile communication technology. The utilization rate of optical modules in 5G base stations is significantly higher than that of 4G base stations. With the large-scale construction of 5G base stations, the superimposed changes in the network structure of 5G base stations will greatly drive the growth of demand for optical modules.
Indium phosphide base has an application market in the manufacture of high-frequency and high-power devices, optical fiber communications, wireless transmission, radio astronomy and other radio frequency devices. RF devices manufactured using indium phosphide substrates (hereinafter referred to as "InP-based RF devices") have shown excellent performance in application scenarios such as satellites and radars. Indium phosphide-based RF devices are highly competitive in the RF front-end of radar and communication systems, analog/mixed signal wide-bandwidth circuits, and are suitable for high-speed data processing, high-precision wide-bandwidth A/D conversion, and other applications. In addition, InP-based RF device-related devices such as low-noise amplifiers, modules, and receivers are also widely used in satellite communications, millimeter-wave radars, active and passive millimeter-wave imaging, and other equipment. At bandwidth levels above 100GHz, the use of InP-based RF devices has obvious advantages in wireless transmission in backhaul networks and point-to-point communication networks. In the future, InP substrates are expected to become the mainstream substrate material for RF devices.
