Automotive body electrophoretic coatings are water-based anti-corrosion primer systems specifically designed for the exterior body-in-white (BIW) and internal structural components of vehicles. Belonging to the category of electrodeposition coatings, they are produced by preparing a stable electrophoretic bath using epoxy cathodic electrophoretic resin (combined with pigments, fillers, flash rust inhibitors, amine neutralizers, and deionized water, etc.). After pretreatment such as degreasing and phosphating, the entire vehicle body is immersed in the bath. A direct current electric field is applied, causing positively or negatively charged coating particles to migrate directionally and deposit on the surface of a conductive metal substrate, forming a uniform and continuous primer film. This is followed by water washing and high-temperature curing to obtain a dense, highly adhesive primer system with excellent corrosion resistance, salt spray resistance, and stone chip resistance. Modern automotive body electrophoretic coatings almost exclusively use cathodic epoxy e-coat as the first anti-corrosion primer. This effectively covers hard-to-paint areas such as body welds, edges, and the interior of reinforcing beams, making it a crucial foundational coating in OEM painting processes for achieving long-life corrosion protection and providing a high-adhesion, high-smooth base for intermediate and topcoats.
Major raw materials include resins, solvents, additives, pigments, and fillers, with the chemical industry being its primary upstream sector. This industry is highly specialized and competitive, with product costs strongly correlated with crude oil prices. While market supply is ample, prices fluctuate to varying degrees due to fluctuations in crude oil prices.
Currently, the world is placing significant emphasis on the research, development, and promotion of new coatings to minimize harmful emissions and human toxicity, with a particular emphasis on low-VOC coatings. Electrophoretic paints are evolving from traditional water-based and low-VOC coatings to more stringent, full-process environmental protection and resource-saving requirements. To meet these demands, coating manufacturers are continuously exploring methods such as lowering coating baking temperatures, reducing heating loss, improving coating processes, and reducing coating usage during the coating process.
