A railway digital signal axle counter is a system used in railway signalling to detect the clear or occupied status of a section of track between two points. The system generally consists of a wheel sensor (one for each end of the section) and an evaluation unit for counting the axles of the train both into and out of the section. They are often used to replace a track circuit.
Axle counting systems are becoming more and more common in the field of track vacancy systems as most railway operators have already installed axle counting systems or even completely converted to this sophisticated and reliable method of wheel identification. Axle counter systems offer many advantages over track circuits, including lower lifecycle costs, higher reliability, better management of large road sections, specific functionality, and others. The vast majority of the world"s rail infrastructure is built using outdated technology and needs to be upgraded to meet current efficiency and safety standards. Modern train communication networks use wired train buses and multipurpose vehicle buses to connect other vehicles and communicate efficiently. With increasing emphasis on maximum efficiency, sales of vehicle control units, computer control units, and other on-train technologies are expected to expand. Due to exponential population growth and rapid urbanization, the movement of goods from one location to another has become more difficult. As a result, rail is a better, more affordable, and safer mode of transportation. The market for railway maintenance equipment is also expanding due to increased government spending on railway infrastructure construction in emerging countries such as Brazil and India. The process of keeping rails in operable condition is called maintenance.
