As an important component in industrial separation equipment, plastic random packing has derived a variety of classic models based on differences in structural design and application scenarios. Each type has its own unique performance advantages.
Pall ring is one of the most widely used types of plastic random packing. Its structure is improved on the Raschig ring. Many rectangular windows are opened in the ring wall. The blades of the window holes are bent inward and parallel to the axis of the ring. This design allows the gas and liquid phases to flow more freely through the window holes, reducing flow resistance and increasing the gas-liquid contact area. Commonly used plastic Pall ring models are divided by outer diameter, including 25mm, 38mm, 50mm, etc. Among them, the 38mm model is the most common in distillation towers in pesticides, dyes and other industries because of its balance between mass transfer efficiency and processing capacity.
The structure of the stepped ring is further optimized. The ring height is only half of the outer diameter. An outward-turned bell mouth is added to one end of the ring. This design changes the contact between adjacent fillers from line contact to point contact when stacked, reducing air flow resistance and improving the uniformity of liquid distribution. The main models of plastic step rings include 16mm, 25mm, 38mm, etc. The smaller 16mm model is suitable for occasions requiring high separation accuracy in fine chemicals due to its large specific surface area, while the 25mm and 38mm models perform well in large absorption towers.
The rectangular saddle ring is also called a conjugate ring. Its structure combines the advantages of saddle and ring shapes. The two sides are arc-shaped and connected by rectangular ribs in the middle. This avoids the problem of easy superposition of saddle-shaped packing and retains good liquid distribution performance. The models of plastic saddle rings are mainly 25mm and 50mm. The 50mm model has a high porosity and is not easy to block when handling liquids containing suspended solids. It is often used in wastewater treatment towers in the environmental protection field.
Haier ring is a new type of plastic random packing developed on the basis of Pall ring. The window holes on the ring wall are larger, and the window blades are bent into the ring and form a certain angle with the ring wall, so that the gas and liquid phases are mixed more fully in the ring. The main models of Haier rings are 25mm and 38mm. Their mass transfer efficiency is 10% to 15% higher than that of Pall rings of the same specification. Therefore, they are widely used in industries that require high separation purity, such as food and medicine.
In addition to the main types mentioned above, there are also special plastic random fillers such as garlands and hollow balls. The rosette packing is composed of multiple annular units, with a light structure and extremely high porosity, and is suitable for occasions with large gas processing volumes; the hollow ball packing has multiple layers of partitions inside, which can disperse and gather liquids multiple times in the ball, and is often used in absorption processes such as desulfurization and decarbonization.
When selecting different types of plastic random packing, factors such as the processing capacity of the separation process, separation accuracy, and material properties need to be comprehensively considered. For example, when dealing with highly corrosive materials, plastic random packing made of polypropylene can be used; while for higher temperature conditions, high-temperature-resistant polytetrafluoroethylene models need to be selected.
