They are a core component of the optical communication industry. The packaging form of optical modules has evolved toward higher speed, miniaturization, and hot-pluggability, from the earlier GBIC packaging to the smaller SFP packaging, and now to the 800G QSFP-DD and OSFP packaging. The main application scenarios include Ethernet, CWDM/DWDM, connectors, Fiber Channel, wired access, and wireless access, covering sub-markets in both data communications and telecommunications. Although the current demand growth for optical module suppliers is mainly driven by 400G optical modules, 800G optical networking technology, which aims to drive high-speed, high-density ports and low-latency data center interconnections (DCI), is ready to emerge. 800G optical modules can receive 80 billion bits per second, more than twice the capacity of the previous generation (400G) optical modules. QSFP-DD, a dual-density quad small form-factor pluggable high-speed module, is currently the preferred packaging for 800G optical modules, allowing data centers to efficiently scale cloud capacity as needed. QSFP-DD modules feature an 8-channel electrical interface, with each channel supporting rates of up to 25Gb/s (NRZ modulation) or 50Gb/s (PAM4 modulation), providing solutions of up to 200Gb/s or 400Gb/s. OSFP is a new optical module that is much smaller than CFP8 but slightly larger than QSFP-DD, featuring 8 high-speed electrical channels and supporting up to 32 OSFP ports per 1U front panel. Paired with integrated heat sinks, it can greatly enhance thermal performance.
