Downstream demand is driven by nitrogen’s ability to deliver high strength without sacrificing corrosion resistance, stabilize austenite, and enable non-magnetic or high-performance stainless designs in certain cases. Reported industrial use cases for PESR-produced high-nitrogen steels include aerospace/aviation, energy, and petrochemical sectors; meanwhile, a major high-value downstream is biomedical materials, where nickel-free/high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels are studied and used as alternatives to conventional Ni-containing medical stainless (e.g., 316L) for devices such as coronary stents due to the combined strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility considerations.
