The core of a vacuum gas nitriding furnace consists of a vacuum chamber equipped with heating elements, gas supply systems, vacuum pumps, and advanced process control units. During operation, the furnace evacuates air to create a high or low vacuum, eliminating atmospheric contaminants and enabling precise control over the process atmosphere. Nitrogen-rich gas—often ammonia (NH3) or nitrogen-hydrogen mixtures—is then introduced under carefully controlled pressure and temperature conditions, allowing nitrogen atoms to diffuse into the workpiece surface layer at temperatures typically ranging from 500°C to 600°C. Vacuum gas nitriding enhances surface properties by producing a hard, wear-resistant nitride layer, often combined with a diffusion zone beneath it that improves fatigue strength. This method reduces distortion and prevents surface oxidation or decarburization, which are common in open-air nitriding processes. The controlled vacuum environment also minimizes the formation of unwanted compounds and ensures a clean, uniform case depth with superior adhesion and dimensional stability.
