A transcritical CO2 condensing unit is a type of refrigeration system that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as the refrigerant and operates in a transcritical cycle. It is a sustainable alternative to traditional refrigeration systems that use synthetic refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP).
In a transcritical CO2 system, the refrigerant operates above its critical point, where both liquid and gas phases coexist. Unlike traditional refrigerants like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), CO2 has a relatively low GWP and does not contribute significantly to global warming.
The transcritical CO2 cycle involves a high-pressure gas cooler, where the CO2 gas rejects heat and condenses into a high-pressure liquid. This high-pressure liquid then flows to an expansion valve, where it undergoes a pressure drop, causing it to expand and cool down. ure CO2 then enters an evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the surroundings, such as a refrigerated space or product. The absorbed heat causes the CO2 to evaporate into a low-pressure gas. The low-pressure gas is then compressed by a compressor, increasing its temperature and pressure, and the cycle repeats. The key feature of the transcritical CO2 cycle is that the gas does not fully condense into a liquid during the heat rejection process, which distinguishes it from subcritical refrigeration cycles. Transcritical CO2 systems are often used in commercial refrigeration applications, such as supermarkets, food processing, and cold storage facilities. They offer several advantages, including high energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and compliance with environmental regulations. However, transcritical CO2 systems can be more complex and require additional components, such as gas coolers designed to handle the higher operating pressures.
